Atlantic Technological University (ATU ) is inviting Transition Year students across Connacht to participate in its 2025 Poetry Pillar Competition.

The competition gives young people a chance to show off their poetic talent and gives their work a chance to be published in The Scrimshaw journal, ATU’s internal literary magazine. Work can also be published in Lasmuigh, a digital and print publication that celebrates work with themes of ecology.

The competition encourages young poets to use nature as inspiration for their work, and this year the theme is water. Winners will be revealed on National Poetry Day on Thursday, April, 24 2025 at the ATU Mayo Campus. There are cash prizes for the top three poems, and the winning poem will join the Poetry Pillar installation in St Mary’s Courtyard Garden on the ATU Mayo campus.

ATU Mayo Head of Department Dr Deirdre Garvey said, “The Poetry Pillar competition is a great opportunity for young students to engage the hearts and minds of others on these issues. Each year the theme explores a different environmental aspect and we are really looking forward to this year’s entries."

Submissions are open until Monday, March 3 2025 and can be sent to [email protected]
