Update on impact of Storm Bert across county Galway

Following our communication on Friday regarding Storm Bert, we provide the following update on its impact across County Galway:

Storm Bert caused significant disruption to Galway and other parts of Ireland over the weekend. County Galway experienced intense rainfall and strong winds, resulting in localised flooding and widespread damage.

Conamara was particularly affected, with over 60mm of rain falling within a short period on Friday night and into Saturday morning. Already saturated ground, combined with snow accumulation, caused rapid surface runoff into rivers and streams, leading to a rapid rise in water levels.

Many rivers and streams burst their banks.

The Owenglin River in Clifden overflowed, flooding seven properties.

The Polladirk River flooded, blocking the N59 at Kylemore.

The Owenriff River in Oughterard also overflowed, causing flooding on the N59.

Elsewhere, localised flooding affected roads across the county, with numerous trees down and several landslides reported. A major landslide blocked the R336 between Leenaun and Maum, while damage to local roads due to scouring rendered some impassable.

Galway County Council had prepared for the expected impact of the storm. Residents in at-risk areas were made aware of the anticipated flood, and distributed sandbags. Crews were on standby, and senior staff were in attendance in Clifden to monitor and coordinate the emergency response through Friday night and Saturday.

The Clifden Fire Service was pre-deployed and responded overnight. Their efforts in pumping floodwaters from The Low Road in conjunction with the sandbags are believed to have prevented additional properties from flooding.

Unfortunately, seven properties in Clifden suffered internal flooding, while others experienced external damage, including significant scouring of sites and driveways. Support for affected private dwellings is being coordinated in partnership with the Department of Social Protection.

Galway County Council's roads crews worked through Saturday and Sunday to address the storm’s aftermath. Efforts focused on reopening roads closed due to landslides and debris. This work is ongoing and will continue into next week to ensure areas are accessible and safety.

The photos attached will give an indication of the storm's impact and the recovery efforts currently underway.
