Santa is receiving visitors inside the magnificent and enchanting medieval vaults which sit underneath Waterford’s Medieval Museum throughout the city's renowned Winterval festival, which runs until December 23. He and his merry elves are ready to meet all the boys and girls who visit Ireland’s oldest city this Christmas.
The Christmas Trail at the Museums offers a fun activity for all the family to enjoy this Christmas season, while also learning a little bit about Ireland’s oldest city. All the family can discover the origins of Christmas traditions by joining this festive seasonal trail across the award-winning Waterford Treasures Museums to solve the Christmas clues and complete the trail to earn a prize. The trail begins at the Medieval Museum and is available for children of all ages with the purchase of a Freedom Pass. Children under 12 go free but must be accompanied by a paying adult. For a nostalgic Christmas experience, don’t miss the exhibition of Toys Through the Ages at the simply divine Georgian Bishop’s Palace. Visitors can explore the wonder of a Victorian-style Christmas with all manner of historic toys in this unique exhibition space adorned with a traditional tree and handmade decorations. Enjoy a special tour led by one of the museum’s curators, which is available on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the festive season. Entry to Bishop’s Palace is €10 per person with under 12s free of charge.
If music is your passion, be sure to attend the Gramophone Concert set to take place in the gorgeous Georgian Bishop’s Palace. Experience a vintage Christmas with these atmospheric renditions of gramophone records featuring classical music and a few old time favourites, presented by Donnchadh O Ceallacháin, curator of the Medieval Museum. The concert takes place on Friday, December 13 at 7pm, tickets are €10pp at www.waterfordtreasures.ie and each ticket includes a festive glass of wine.
