Recital remembers Mother & Baby Homes

As the film adaptation of Claire Keegan’s Small Things like These, is showing in cinemas, Musici Ireland bring their poignant project A Mother’s Voice to Nuns Island Theatre on Friday, November 22, at 7.20pm.

A Mother's Voice is a commemorative dedication to the many women affected by the mother and baby homes in Ireland during the twentieth century.

“When I saw the many reports on mother and baby homes come out in 2020, one thing that struck me was that the mothers were not being heard,” says Musici Ireland artistic director Beth McNinch.

This prompted a two-year development bringing together McNinch with violinist Jane Hackett, resulting in a performance which consists of an immersive exhibit by Bridget Ni Dhuinn, with lighting by Eoin McNinch. It showcases a performance of the original music by Cork composers Linda and Irene Buckley with animation by Eabha Bortolozzo and Jack Kirwan.

Most importantly, the piece also features the voices of three mothers: 'Cait', Deirdre Wadding and Sheila O'Byrne.

Standing performance. Tickets €10 to €20 from www.musicforgalway.ie Phone 091 705962 for seating assistance.
