Being a Support Worker with the Brothers of Charity Services Ireland isn’t just a job—it’s a career that’s given me stability, growth, and purpose. I start each day helping those I support with their morning routines, ensuring people feel respected and comfortable as they get ready for the day. It’s in these small, everyday moments that trust is built.

After breakfast I support people to enjoy their day which may include driving to appointments and preferred activities. But it’s not all fun and games—there’s a lot of responsibility too. I keep detailed records of each person’s progress and important observations which is all part of making sure we’re giving the best possible care.

Afternoons vary: sometimes I’m assisting with lunch, cleaning the home or supporting a person to take part in an activity. There’s always a balance between providing help and encouraging independence. Weekends bring their own rhythm, and the premium pay is a welcome acknowledgment of that extra effort.

By evening, we’re settling in and helping with bedtime routines. There’s a satisfaction in knowing the day ended with everyone feeling safe and valued.

This job isn’t without challenges, but the stability of a permanent, pensionable career with competitive rates of pay makes it all worthwhile.
