Yet another chinese electric vehicle maker has announced its arrival into the Irish market, this time the turn of Xpeng (pronounced Shao-Peng ) which has partnered with Motor Distributors Limited (MDL ) as its exclusive importer and distributor here.
The first model to be launched in Ireland from Xpeng's all-electric passenger car range will be the mid-sized G6 SUV, with a quoted range between 435km to 570km.
This could eventually be joined in Ireland by the flagship G9 SUV, the P7 saloon, and the P7+ fastback saloon, with AI technology said to be a key feature.
No dealerships have been appointed by MDL as of yet, but a spokesperson for the company told us that it will "expand its dealer network sufficient to ensure that effective representation and competition exists between all of the brands the company now represents". This includes Mercedes- Benz, BYD and Smart.
The spokesperson added that MDL "will have conversations with dealers with whom it has worked with in the past and others that would be new to the organisation”.
MDL chief executive, Paddy Finnegan said: “Offering as it does, another excellent example of Chinese all-electric drive construction and technology, and of its build quality within a high-class design complete with sleek interior styling attractive to the eyes of European motorist, the current Xpeng range – plus those many models yet to be developed – will constitute an exciting choice of options for buyers and dealers seeking something new and climate-friendly in the field of personal transportation."
Founded in 2014, Xpeng is reinforcing its commitment to the European market, where it continues to expand its presence across key regions. Since deliveries began in Norway at the end of 2020, the brand has introduced its EVs in multiple countries, including Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal, with further expansion underway.
Xpeng's models, including the G6, G9 and the P7, have all received Euro NCAP five-star safety ratings. By the end of 2025, Xpeng says it aims to be present in over 60 global markets, with an ambition to achieve half of its total sales from international markets.
