Workshop on supporting staff through grief

Local employers are invited to attend a special workshop, Strategies for Supporting Grieving Employees, on Wednesday, 6 November, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Diligent Bonham Quay, Dock Rd, Galway. This workshop, hosted by HopeSpace Children’s Grief Support Service, will provide guidance on how to support employees dealing with grief, ensuring both compassionate care and sustained workplace performance.

At an event announcing details of the workshop, Aine Deely of HopeSpace shared “Bereavement affects one in ten employees at any given time, significantly impacting their concentration, mental health, and work performance. Research shows that many bereaved employees feel unsupported, isolated, and overlooked at work.”

The workshop will offer practical solutions for employers, people managers, and HR personnel to help them create a supportive environment. Participants will learn effective ways to communicate with grieving employees, how to navigate cultural differences in grief, and the importance of developing bereavement policies. Self-care techniques for managers and colleagues will also be discussed.

“Our goal is to help workplaces become more compassionate,” said Deely. “By attending, employers can make a real difference in helping their employees return to productive work after experiencing loss.”

The event will be facilitated by Amy Gibney, National Grief in the Workplace Awareness Coordinator at the IHF. To encourage in-depth discussion, participation is limited to 25 attendees. While the workshop is free to attend, donations are welcomed to support HopeSpace, Galway’s new children’s charity, which provides free one-to-one grief support for bereaved children and young people.
