Images from Connemara took two of the top three spots in the coastal heritage category of an Taisce’s Love Your Coast photography competition last week.
Running since 2010, the competition for amateur photographers sports a €5,000 prize fund, and is part of the Clean Coasts programme which engages with local communities and volunteers in relation to marine litter.
Joe Silke took first place with his photo ‘Fisherman's Hut’, taken in south Connemara. Speaking on his photo, Silke says: “Captured during a day trip to Connemara, this old cottage sits beside one of the many loughs in South Connemara. The light here shifts constantly, making each photo unique. This ancient cottage, a long-time base for anglers, is a charming example of the traditional Irish architecture of the region.”
Placing third in the Heritage on the Coast category was Felix Sproll with his photo ‘Fishing for Aurora’, snapped in Screebe, Co Galway. “Taken in late December, the setting sun lighting up the brown and red shrubs complimented with no wind, this was the most idyllic evening to capture Doon Fort. With Croagh Head and Aranmore Island sitting in the Atlantic behind it, it’s hidden away and not signposted on account of it being surrounded fully by private lands. As a result, this photo required my DJI Mini2 drone.”
William Murphy won the overall Photographer of the Year title as well as first place in the People and the Coast category with his photo ‘An Fear Marbh agus an Fear ag eitilt’, taken at Slea Head Drive, Dingle, Co Kerry.
