Galway Athletics weekly roundup

University of Galway Athletics Club achieved an historic overall team win at the IUAA Intervarsity Cross Country Championships, held at the UCC Sports Grounds in Cork on Saturday last.

On the women’s side, Fiona Everard was crowned the Ladies champion for the second year with a dominant performance, which sets her up well for a tilt at next month’s National Senior Championships. Next home was first-year student Caitlin Hughes on her debut with the university, placing 12th. Shauna Leydon and Neasa Ni Ainifein also placed high, coming in 23rd and 26th. With a strong team of thirteen, the women’s team placed fourth overall, missing out on a medal by only nine points.

The men’s team was led by Thomas McStay, who placed 4th overall in the men’s race. Oisin Murray followed in 6th, with Oisin Davis placing 9th. Daniel Ryan Eilis made a superb university debut, placing 12th. He was closely followed by Donal Farren and Luke Johnston who placed 13th and 14th respectively to close out the scoring six. The Men’s team dominated the competition, beating out UL, the nearest challengers by forty-five points, taking home the coveted Green Fox Trophy. The UG squad extend special thanks to Head coach Matt Lockett, William Hughes and Club Captain Jack Maher.

Connacht Juvenile Cross Country Championships Day One

Last weekend Connacht Cross Country event was postponed due to weather conditions. The rescheduled date for the fixture i.e. the Juvenile Even Ages and Adult Senior League Day 2 is Bank Holiday Monday, October 28 (11am ) at the same venue, Moyne in Longford.

Dublin Marathon

Next Sunday sees the Dublin Marathon, incorporating the National Championships, take place around the streets of the capital from 9am. Upwards of 200 Galway club athletes are entered for the 26.2 mile round trip.
