How to choose bedroom colours

Colour consultants at Pat McDonnell Paints have given their top tips and tricks to help you make the right decision on what colour you pick and make sure you don't regret the colour you chose after.

As Regina Burke, a Colour Consultant in Pat McDonnell Paints' Commons Road store advises, “When choosing a paint colour for your bedroom, consider what atmosphere you are trying to create. Do you want a fresh and airy space, a dark moody sanctuary or something in between?"

Work with the room:

Consider the amount of light your room gets. For a north-facing room, consider warm colours like creamy whites, soft greys, or pale yellows to add warmth and brightness. Cool colours like blues, greens, or greys can create a soothing and refreshing atmosphere for south-facing rooms. It's also important to consider the colours of furniture and fittings that won't change like the flooring, curtains and wardrobe.

Create a cosy cocoon:

Darker colours can transform your room into a cosy cocoon-like space. Greens and browns like Wooded Walk by Dulux Heritage or Grendel by Ralston can add an earthy feel to your room. The colour drenching technique where you paint the walls, ceiling, and trim all in the same colour is also something to consider.

Go for soothing blue:

Research from the National Sleep Foundation found that painting your bedroom walls in blue can improve sleep quality as your brain associates blue with feelings of calmness. Some shades of blue recommended by Colour Consultants at Pat McDonnell Paint were Antique Blue by Ralston, Elfin by Colourtrend, or Dix Blue by Farrow & Ball.

Introduce a bold accent colour:

With bedrooms a good way to introduce a bold colour is through an accent wall. There are several options to choose from including painting a wall in a bold accent colour, installing painted wall panelling, or hanging a beautiful wallpaper. "A popular option is to place the accent wall behind the headboard to allow for the use of vibrant colours without affecting sleep quality," said Fiona Finnegan, Colour Consultant at Centre Park Road.

Consult an expert:

If your still unsure of what to do it could be a good idea to consult an expert. Pat McDonnell Paints offers a free Colour Consultancy service with qualified design and colour experts in all of their stores.
