Given the weather, looking up towards the sky is not something Galwegians are used to doing. That all changed on January 19, when the city's punters turned their head skywards, their attention drawn by a luminous, green barbershop newly opened above Johnny Waldron's Joke Shop on Shop St.

‘Poblacht’ is a barbering venture between brothers Evan and Cóilí, who have a shared passion for hair, as well as a dogged work ethic and, above all else, a deep love for their hometown of Galway city.

The shop’s green walls are almost as distinctive as the heads coming in and out of the shop. Poblacht is a home to Galway’s weird and wonderful, with an ethos of open doors to any haircut - nothing is too crazy and nothing is too vanilla - making 40B, on the second floor of William Street, the true Republic of Hair.

Poblacht's initial 10 months in business has proved to be a roaring success. Evan and Cóilí have successfully sold a range of merchandise, hosted late night parties and built a legitimate community which crosses the town’s many subcultures and sporting communities, all in the shop. As well as these achievements, Poblacht's success has proven that there is room for the town's young people to build their own business.

So, if you cast your eye on the green shop in the sky, make the trip up the stairs and book yourself a hair upgrade.
