A group of health and social care professionals at Galway University Hospitals (GUH ) will be holding a virtual careers evening for secondary school students on Wednesday, October 23 from 6pm.
The evening will give students an insight into careers in occupational therapy, social work, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and nutrition and dietetics.
Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and speak with qualified professionals who work within these areas of the hospital. In addition, third level students who are currently undertaking courses for a range of health and social care professions will be available to give an overview of what student life is like and what the courses entail.
"Based on feedback, secondary school students and guidance counsellors who have taken part in our previous career evenings have found them very beneficial," said Anne Marie Lydon, physiotherapy practice tutor. "According to attendees, it provided insights into the daily life of a professional that isn’t obvious from a college prospectus or a course syllabus.
“By hosting the event virtually, we are able to reach a larger audience and perhaps, inspire and motivate the next generation of social workers and health professionals.”
The timetable for the presentations by each specialty is as follows:
• 6pm-6.15pm: Introduction to a career in health and social care professions.
• 6.15pm-6.45pm: Speech and language therapy.
• 6.45pm-7.15pm: Social work.
• 7.15pm-7.45pm: Physiotherapy.
• 7.45pm-8.15pm: Occupational therapy.
• 8.15pm-8.45pm: Nutrition and dietetics.
