Tennessee tunes for Galway

Valerie June from Memphis, TN

Valerie June from Memphis, TN

The Black Gate’s programme of autumn gigs has a transatlantic flavour, with Grammy-nominated American artist Valerie June, to perform at the Róisín Dubh next Wednesday, October 16 at 8pm, with special guest Doug Paisley.

Valerie June is from Tennessee. She effortlessly blends folk, soul, blues, and traditional Appalachian elements into a refreshingly timeless sound that sits outside any particular musical era.

She has been hailed by The New York Times as one of America’s “most intriguing, fully formed new talents.” She has recorded three critically acclaimed, best-selling solo albums, and has also written songs for legendary artists such as Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Her albums have been praised by numerous publications such as Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, NPR Music, No Depression, Paste Magazine, Mojo, Uncut and others. She's been featured on The Tonight Show, CBS, PBS, Austin City Limits, Later with Jools, and many more.

She will be joined by Canadian folk musician Doug Paisley, and his evocative songs, expressive guitar playing, and beautiful tenor voice. He has earned comparisons to darker, more storied writers like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. He seems to harmonize with them in one respect: he is not afraid to set easy sounds against hard truths, and sings his plain-spoken laments with understated intensity, and quiet, resolute strength. Unanimously celebrated in the likes of Rolling Stone, MOJO, The New Yorker and the Wall Street Journal, Doug counts among his collaborators Bonnie Prince Billy, Leslie Feist and The Band's Garth Hudson. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets €27.50 from bit.ly/blackgatetickets
