After an incredible start, a mid-season stutter, the retention of a national trophy followed by an inspiring league run; Galway United’s second campaign in the women’s game is playing out without a climax worthy of their efforts.
Last Saturday, United travelled to Treaty knowing intuitively that their title run was over. Nevertheless, the news that Athlone had clinched the title before kick-off must have further flattened the feeling in the dressing room.
By virtue of their superior head-to-head record with Shelbourne, a win last weekend at home to Bohs confirmed them as champions, only the second team from outside the capital to win the league.
It denied Phil Trill’s side the opportunity to have a say on the final day. Perhaps feeling the weight of the disappointment, itself a massive marker of progress, United succumbed to a much-improved Treaty side 1-0 in the Markets Field. In the process, Treaty climbed above Cork and Bohs in the table.
United finish the season this Saturday at home to the champions. Not the occasion that might have been dreamed of, it nonetheless represents an opportunity to finish on a high and to offer a reminder of their quality.
Management will be keen to get some more points on the board to surpass last year’s total and continue the upward trajectory. This has already been secured in terms of league position and goals scored.
Yet, it is natural that thoughts would already begin to drift to next year’s campaign. It will be the second question to be put to management on Saturday evening after the game.
By virtue of their cup success, this team has already cemented a legacy. The age profile of their side encourages that there is another tilt in them. It won’t come easy. There is an expectation that Shamrock Rovers will improve again. Shelbourne may be aging but they proved themselves plenty this season. Athlone have won their respect. Peamount and Wexford are the most successful sides of recent years. There is scope for further improvement for Treaty and Cork.
There has been consistent praise in the camp about the backing that they have received from the club. If the nucleus of this side can be sustained and nurtured, there will be plenty more memorable days.
