Mairead Dee and her 13-year-old son Lochlan will embark on a mammoth bicycle trek next week to raise money for Ábalta Special School in Parkmore, Galway.

The mother and son aim to cycle 150km over three days along The National Famine Way, from Strokestown, Co Roscommon, to Maynooth, Co Kildare.

By completing this challenge, Mairead is hoping to raise funds for Ábalta School - an autism-specific school, which provides education and a wide range of therapies under one roof.

These therapies include Speech & Language, Music, Occupational Therapy , Dance, Art & Crafts, Life Skills and more, all integrated into the education curriculum by Ábalta’s phenomenol teachers.

“The highly qualified staff go above and beyond to give support, education, care and kindness to their fabulous students,” says Mairead. She says the school needs funds for school supplies, day trips, and a school bus.

The school currently operates from Parkmore Business Park, but is hoping to move to the campus of the new Galway Educate Together Secondary School to be constructed at a site at Garraun South in Oranmore.
