Hybrid Avenger is a little marvel

The Jeep Avenger e-Hybrid is an interesting little proposition. Supplementing the already available fully-electric and internal combustion engine versions, the new Avenger e-Hybrid extends the Jeep brand’s electrification journey.

The engaging 100hp 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine is paired with a 21kw electric motor integrated into a double-clutch six-speed automatic transmission. A 48-volt belt starter ensures a smooth transition to the electric drive, while the 0.9 kWh lithium-ion battery is located under the driver's seat, with no impact on the interior space, which remains the same as that of the Avenger petrol. Fuel consumption from the 44-litre tank averages around 5.1-litre/100km.

The entire 48-volt hybrid system weighs only 60kg more than a conventional automatic transmission, keeping the total weight of the new Avenger e-Hybrid to just 1,280 kg. Throw this all together and you are left with a marvellous little front-wheel-drive car to drive, with just the right amount of power for its size.

There are three trim levels available: 'Longitude', 'Altitude', and the flagship 'Summit'. On test was the latter, which boasts that distinctive Jeep radiator grille along with 18-inch alloy wheels and full LED front projectors and rear lights.

On the inside, we find an easy to use 10.25-inch centre touchscreen, a JBL audio system, as well as multi-colour ambient lighting and an electrochromic 'frameless' rear-view mirror that adds sophistication to the ensemble. The indicators also make an amusing drumbeat noise (think, 'Rehab' by Amy Winehouse ).

When it comes to technology, the Summit offers keyless entry and engine start, blind spot monitoring, a 180-degree rear-view camera with drone view, 360-degree parking sensors, automatic high beams, a hands-free liftgate, and Level 2 autonomous driving capability. Heated front seats is a further option via the winter pack.

In the entry-level version, cruise control is there, while safety and technology are not compromised, with the offer of a full set of features including autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist plus driver attention assist.

Indeed, the Jeep Avenger e-Hybrid is quite compact at 1.72m wide, 4.08m long and 1.53m tall. Rear legroom is adequate but probably too cramped for three adults. There is a respectable 380-litres of boot space with all seats up.

Pricing for the Jeep Avenger e-Hybrid starts from €33,995 for the Longitude, rising to €39,495 for the Summit. This puts it in the same price bracket as the likes of the similarly sized Volkswagen T-Roc and a high spec Renault Captur. It is definitely one to consider.
