Guaire Magazine, running since 1973, is preparing to release its 2024 edition. This will be the 39th issue of the magazine and it will be launched in the Lady Gregory Hotel, Gort on Friday, October 18.
This community produced publication celebrates stories from past and present such as a recorded interview with Jack Fahy from 1974, about the start of hurling in Gort, while it also features the Guaire Magazine’s Children’s Creative Arts Competition which had 100 entries from six schools in South Galway.
Centenary celebrations are a theme in this year’s edition featuring WB Yeats’ Pulitzer Prize while his brother Jack also has a centenary prize of his own. Gort Golf Club is 100 years old, as is the Gort Rugby Club, two staples of the local community for generations.
Guaire also celebrates the increasing multiculturalism of Gort and its surrounding areas with a feature on the Brazil Day Festival, produced to perfection by members of the sizeable Brazilian community in Gort.
Copies of the magazine will be available in shops all across South Galway in Gort, Cloone, Labane and Kinvara for €10.
