‘By discovering the potential of each individual and developing his or her ability to the maximum, we aim to foster sound, capable people and thus contribute to the global community.’

The outcomes of this Kumon mission statement were much in evidence at the recent awards ceremony of Kumon Galway City West where every student received an award for their own unique achievement.

The Kumon maths and English programmes stretch from pre-school to university entry level. These programmes are tailored to the student, who completes worksheets on paper or on tablet.

An initial assessment (free ) is used to find the ‘just right’ start point for each student. The student commits to daily study of a maximum of 20 minutes (per subject ) while dealing with primary school material. Daily study of 30 minutes is recommended for secondary school material.

Progress through the levels is matched to the capacity of the student. Mastery is assessed at the end of each level. Over time, many students find themselves working far ahead of their school grade. In addition, students acquire study skills and time management skills which aid independent learning in all areas.

Students working six months ahead of their age are awarded bronze medals, those working two years ahead of their age receive silver medals and gold medals are awarded to students working three or more years ahead of their age.
