‘Staying Abreast’ is an exciting new podcast series launched by National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI )
The podcast is focused on one of the major health issues impacting Irish women today, breast cancer. According to the Marie Keating Foundation there are around 3,452 cases diagnosed and 730 deaths from the cancer each year.
The first series of the podcast, recorded in conjunction with GK Media and hosted by Aileen Hickey, runs over eight weeks where Aileen talks to those living with a breast cancer diagnoses, discusses life after breast cancer, meets medical experts and takes a look at the exciting new developments that are taking place through research across areas such as treatment, medication and care.
In the first episode Aileen interviews Aisling Keogh, a Galway native and former hockey umpire about her journey with breast cancer.
Diagnosed shortly after her wedding in January 2018, Aisling shares her life before the diagnosis, the importance of body awareness and the challenges she faced during treatment. The conversation highlights the significance of early detection, family health history and self-compassion. Aisling discusses her treatment experiences including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, and emphasizes the need for a supportive network. The episode also features insights from Professor Michael Kerin, Director of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute on advancements in breast cancer research.
