Councillor Albert Dolan (FF ) wants Iarnród Éireann to provide extra capacity on the Athenry to Galway service.

County Galway’s youngest-ever Cathaoirleach says rail commuters are facing overcrowding every day.

“Some of the concerns I hear from constituents are quite worrying. It seems capacity is the main issue here. Having 150 people or more on a service and only providing two carriages is unsustainable.”

Cllr Dolan, who is a candidate in the the upcoming General Election, said that he has been contacted by many concerned commuters and passengers and has said he has spoken with the Chief Executive of Galway County Council to try solve this ongoing problem.”

“I have spoken to the Chief Executive of the Galway County Council in relation to this matter, and I can confirm that he will talk to the Chief Executive of Irish Rail in relation to this matter”.

Cllr Dolan has said action is needed urgently as the overcrowding on this service is already a safety issue and doesn’t allow for a comfortable journey for commuters.

“The least commuters can expect on any service is a comfortable journey and that cannot be the case at this moment in time. We are trying to encourage people to use their cars less, but when you hear of the overcrowding on services such as the Athenry to Galway service, it would turn you off using public transport.”

“I will provide an update to my constituents as soon as I hear the outcome of the Chief Executives meeting,” he concluded.
