Once an industrial powerhouse, Bilbao underwent a remarkable transformation in the late 20th century, reinventing itself as a cultural hub. Surrounded by rolling green hills the city now pops with the contrast of old and new.
A Guggenheim Odyssey
The centerpiece of Bilbao's cultural renaissance is undoubtedly the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, a masterpiece of contemporary architecture designed by Frank Gehry. This iconic building, with its sinuous curves and titanium-clad exterior, has become a symbol of the city's revitalization. With Koons' outdoor installation "Puppy" becoming the pet mascot for the city, the forty three foot high floral pooch stands proudly in front of the museum looking towards the city. The Guggenheim's creative exhibitions and innovative programming make it a must-see for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
Exploring the Casco Viejo
After immersing yourself in the world of art, take a stroll through Casco Viejo, Bilbao's historic old town. This charming district is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets lined with traditional Basque buildings, cozy cafes, and charming shops.
Wander through the Plaza Nueva, a lively square bustling with locals and tourists enjoying a leisurely coffee or pintxo at a plethora of award winning bars and bistros, Cafe Bar Bilbao and Gure toki were two of my favorites.
Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Mercado de la Ribera, a bustling food market offering a wide array of fresh produce, seafood, and a home to a food court with several vendors serving up Basque delicacies.
A Funicular Adventure
For a panoramic view of Bilbao, take a funicular ride up to Artxanda hill.
The funicular station is located near the Casco Viejo, and the journey offers stunning vistas of the city and the surrounding countryside. At the top, you'll find a park, a restaurant, and several viewpoints where you can relax and soak in the scenery.
One of Bilbao's most striking architectural landmarks is the Zubizuri Bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava. This pedestrian bridge, with its distinctive white curves and glass panels, connects the Casco Viejo with the Abandoibarra district. As you walk across the bridge, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city's skyline and the Nervión River.
Pintxos and Calimocho
No visit to Bilbao would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Pintxos, small, flavorful snacks served on skewers, are a staple of Basque gastronomy. From classic combinations like cod with piquillo peppers and tortilla to more adventurous creations, there's a pintxo to suit every palate.
Pair your pintxos with a glass of calimocho, a refreshing and slightly sweet drink made with red wine and Coke, and you'll have a truly authentic Basque experience. The value for money throughout Bilbao is outstanding with a glass of wine and a beer will set you back just €4:30 in Bar SantaMaria in Casco Viejo. An Americano coffee in any of the numerous amazing bakery coffee shops of local chain Bertiz will set you back just €1.65 but make sure to pair it with any of their delicious pastries like local favourites, a meringue topped Carolina or the almondy goodness of a Pantxineta.
