Minister for Disability and Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East, Anne Rabbitte, has welcomed confirmation that the first affordable homes developed in county Galway since 2013 are nearing completion. The 61 affordable housing units at the Garraí Na Gaoithe development in Claregalway mark a significant milestone in addressing the urgent need for affordable housing in the region.
She encouraged everyone interested to check out the Galway County Council website and attend the information evening tonight Thursday October 3 in the Claregalway Hotel.
The Garraí Na Gaoithe development, the first turnkey housing scheme in County Galway to include affordable housing under the Government’s ‘Housing for All’ policy, will be delivered in three phases. The first phase, comprising 17 units, is nearing completion and includes a mix of two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and four-bedroom houses.
Work on the second phase, consisting of 16 additional homes, will commence in January 2025, with delivery expected in mid-2025. The third phase, which will include 28 units, is scheduled to begin later next year. Conveniently located on Lakeview Road, the development also features a crèche and is close to local amenities in Claregalway.
Minister Rabbitte said the completion of these affordable homes in Claregalway represents a crucial step in our ongoing commitment to providing housing for people across Galway. It is clear to see that record investment under Housing for All is bearing fruit in a robust delivery pipeline and a strong momentum is growing.
“This government has been working very hard to make homeownership a reality for many families across the country, and this is the real results of that here in Galway. It is far too long since we’ve seen such a scheme come on stream and it certainly won’t be the last.
“The Garraí Na Gaoithe development is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in tackling the housing crisis. We are grateful to all the partners involved, particularly Galway County Council, in bringing this project to fruition, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact on the area and for the new homeowners themselves.
“The minimum purchase price will be €245,000 for a two-bed mid-terrace house, the market value of which would otherwise be €320,000, while a4 Bed End Terrace will start from €365,000, where the market value would be €440,000.
