Galway’s life boat station will be open to visitors this weekend for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, after volunteers were called out twice last week.

The RNLI facility at the New Docks in Galway city will be open to all this Saturday, September 28, from midday to 4pm.

“This year we are celebrating the charity’s 200 year anniversary. We are looking forward to welcoming people down to the station,” says Mike Swan, Operations Manager in Galway.

The RNLI, a registered charity, operates 24/7, and in the last week alone Galway-based volunteers rescued a man who was cut off by the incoming tide on Hare Island near Ballyloughane Beach.

The crew of Brian Niland, Martin Oliver and Stefanie Carr swooped in when the rising tide left the walkway to Hare island inaccessible. The casualty was located and taken safely on board the lifeboat. No medical attention was needed.

There were also reports of a rescue on Friday, September 20, when the Coastguard tasked the Galway lifeboat to assist a motorboat with five passengers off Ballyvaughan. No injuries reported.
