West Electoral Area and Knocknacarra based Councillor Donal Lyons has welcomed this week’s decision by the members of Galway City Council to take the Ros Ard estate in charge.

The process of taking Ros Ard in charge was initiated by the then Ros Ard Residents Association when the maintenance of the green areas in the Ros Ard estate ceased in 1999.

“At the time, I was contacted by members of the Residents Association and I made representations to Galway City Council. In a reply to my representations, I was informed that the process of Taking-in-Charge of the estate should be completed by the end of 1999,” he said.

“Regretfully that deadline was missed and since then the Officers and Committee of the Ros Ard Residents Association have been to the forefront in seeking to have the estate taken in charge. I and my fellow West Electoral Area Councillors have had a number of meetings on site with residents and City Council officials to progress the issue,” added Cllr Lyons.

Although it has taken over five years to have the process finalised, he said he knows that this week’s decision will be welcome news to the Ros Ard Residents Association who have been actively campaigning to have their particular estate completed and the taking in charge process finalised.

“Ros Ard has been built for over 30 years and is only now been taken in charge by the Council. In the West Electoral Area there are a number of other estates that have not yet been taken-in-charge and I will be pursuing these particular estates with officials to progress the taking in charge process.

“I want to thank officials in the Roads Department for their help and assistance in the process just finalised,” he concluded.
