Commuters in Loughrea 'completely failed by Government and NTA' says O'Hara

Sinn Féin Councillor and Galway East General Election candidate, Louis O'Hara, has said that commuters in Loughrea have been completely failed by the Government and NTA (National Transport Authority ).

O'Hara spoke after passengers were left stranded in Galway at the weekend due to lack of space on the last evening bus.

Councillor O'Hara said many people were left stranded in Galway this weekend as the last bus from Galway to Loughrea was completely full.

"This is a common occurrence due to the lack of evening services after 6pm. It is a disgrace that a town the size of Loughrea has been left without proper bus services for so long."

“Commuters from Loughrea have been completely failed by the Government and NTA who have repeatedly stated that Loughrea is already well-served by existing private operators. Private operators cannot be relied on and the people of Loughrea have waited long enough for an adequate public transport service,@ he said.

“It is only now that the NTA have acknowledged this issue and issued proposals to Local Link for evening services. While any increase in services would be welcome, the solution is a publicly funded PSO bus service as existed previously. It is time that Government intervened and ensured that a proper public transport service is delivered for people in Loughrea," concluded Cllr O'Hara.
