Learn to garden, grow food or help the environment in Galway Community College of Further Education

Galway Community College of Further Education (GCCFE ) offers an exciting and long-established QQI Level 5 Horticulture course under the helm of Seán O’Loughlin.

O’Loughlin, who has over 30 years' teaching experience and facilitates a fun learning environment, said: "It is an ideal programme for anyone passionate about gardening, growing food, and making a positive impact on the environment."

Designed for learners of all ages, this hands-on course blends theory with practical experience in the 20 metre polythene tunnel on the beautiful Wellpark campus, just 10 minutes from Galway city centre.

Students gain valuable knowledge in growing fruit, vegetables, trees, shrubs, and flowers as well as landscaping and garden maintenance. The course emphasizes biodiversity and sustainable practices, highlighting the importance of protecting Mother Earth for future generations. An exciting feature of the programme is the involvement in the maintenance of a native woodland at nearby Lough Atalia, where students help plant and nurture trees as part of their practical learning.

A key component of the course is the 40 days of work experience, where students gain practical skills in nurseries, garden centres, community gardens, organic vegetable growers, florists, private and public gardens. Some students have the opportunity to gain work experience in Europe as part of the Erasmus+ programme.

Upon completion, students have pursued the entire range of progression pathways available, including advanced Level 6 Horticulture courses in Westport and the Botanic Gardens, as well as Level 8 degrees in Blanchardstown and SETU Waterford.

Many graduates have successfully entered careers in horticulture and the food industry. Affordable course fees make this programme accessible, paving the way for a rewarding future in horticulture. A few places still remain on this course for the coming academic year.
