TG4 has announced that the station will again broadcast weekly matches and highlights from the upcoming Australian Football League Women’s (AFLW ) season.
Included in this coverage will be former Galway county player Áine McDonagh, who hails from Maigh Chuilinn. McDonagh plays as a Key Forward for Melbourne side Hawthorn.
In 2022, McDonagh's first AFLW season, the 25-year-old played seven games and kicked four goals. She won Hawthorn’s Most Improved Player award in 2023 off the back of a barnstorming season in the forward line.
McDonagh was the lead goal-scorer in 2023 with 10 goals in 10 games, proving herself as an integral part of the squad. In spite of this, Hawthorn finished 14th out of 18 in the AFLW table.
In Ireland, as well as playing for the Galway senior ladies, McDonagh also plied her trade for the NUIG Mystics basketball team.
A record 34 Irish players will take the field this season with 18 Irish counties represented. Mayo lead the pack with six players. Tipperary follow close behind with five.
The AFLW Competition begins this weekend with 18 teams battling it out to see who will reach the Grand Final on November 30.
TG4 will broadcast two matches deferred each weekend as well as weekly highlights as part of GAA 2024 on Monday evenings at 8pm.
