New course enroling for carers of people with dementia

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is currently recruiting participants for its Insights into Dementia courses around the country. The organisation offers both online and in-person courses, designed with family carers in mind.

The online course is called Home Based Care-Home Based Education, and the in-person course is called Insights into Dementia - Informing and Empowering Family Carers. Both courses include similar topics and share similar objectives, with the Insights course having recently been revised and improved upon.

These courses are free of charge and run for seven weeks, with participants attending one session per week.

Insights into Dementia - Informing and Empowering Family Carers

This is an in-person course that provides information on dementia and its impact. It aims to empower family carers by providing detailed information on dementia and how it progresses, as well as practical advice for carers. This course has recently been updated and improved.

Insights covers topics such as:

Dementia and looking after yourself.

Changing relationships and accessing information.

Communication and staying active.

Responsive behaviours and safety at home.

Personal care and nutrition.

Course review and next steps.

The carer-centred courses aim to support and empower carers of people with different stages of dementia, and Insights has a particular focus on the carer taking time to look after their own wellbeing and personal challenges while caring for a relative with dementia.

To date, participants report feeling more confident and equipped, and have consistently provided positive feedback for courses and tutors.

A course will take place in The Connaught Hotel, Galway, from Monday September 9 with sessions taking place from 10am to 12.30pm every Monday until October 21. For further details and bookings phone 1800 341341 or email [email protected].
