Croí na Gaillimhe Resource Centre fights social isolation and promotes lifelong learning

Croí na Gaillimhe is a vital community centre, offering older adults and people in general a range of programmes designed to combat isolation and promote lifelong learning.

At the heart of the centre's efforts are its lunch and social clubs, which provide not just meals, but crucial opportunities for seniors to connect with others, breaking the cycle of loneliness.

“For many of our members, this is the main social interaction of the week,” says Loretta Needham, manager of CNG. “We’ve seen how a simple meal shared with others can significantly improve someone’s mood and overall wellbeing.”

Understanding the importance of fostering connections beyond their peer group, the centre runs an innovative intergenerational programme called Young Hearts. Older adults and young people engage in shared activities like storytelling, art, music, puppet shows, and exploring the environment with the University of Galway, thus fostering mutual understanding and respect across generations.

In addition to social activities, the centre offers recreational classes such as yoga, art, crafting, sewing, quilting, mosaic, mobile phone and tablet, and conversational English, keeping both minds and bodies active. These classes are more than just hobbies — they are powerful tools that help participants stay connected, learn new skills, and maintain a sense of purpose.

Mary, a regular attendee, sums it up perfectly: “Coming here has changed my life. I used to feel so alone, but now I have friends, I’m learning new things, and I feel like I’m part of something bigger.”

The registration morning for classes is on September 10. Call in between 9.30pm and 12.30pm. For more information contact 091 895203 or email [email protected].
