Together they delivered a memorable rendition of the modern folk anthem, ‘Fisherman's Blues’ to a packed audience enjoying one of the new Summer Sessions in Carnmore.

First launched in 2018, the Galway Ukulele Festival has grown out of weekly ukulele sessions running for nearly a decade in Galway. They draw musicians and enthusiasts from all over the world.

In June 2024, the festival brought dozens of ukulele players and drummers together to perform a mass rendition of ‘Fisherman’s Blues’ which caught the attention of Mike Scott, lead singer and founding member of The Waterboys.

Struck by the energy and enthusiasm of the ukulele players, Scott extended an invitation to the festival crew, offering them the chance to join the band on stage at the Summer Sessions in Galway Airport.

For the 30 ukulele players and drummers who participated, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"It was great to be part of this for the ukulele players and drummers who got to join the band on stage for this experience,” said Gerry Savage, director of Galway Uke Fest. “Who knows what might happen following next year’s festival, which is being planned for June 2025?"
