The Harbour Hotel has taken an impressive stride in sustainability by being awarded the prestigious Green Tourism Gold award, which recognises a company’s strong focus on reducing its environmental impact.
Marking only its second year in the Green Tourism awards certification programme, major efforts from the Harbour’s sustainably minded team have seen the hotel move from the Bronze to Gold within 12 months.
Eco updates that have been made so far include,
They have an energy management monitoring system in place called Acutrace. This allows us to measure and monitor our energy consumption. Monthly meetings are held to discuss the results of this and measures are agreed to try to reduce our consumption.
They have installed sensor lighting systems in our back of house areas
Our products in bathrooms are refillable and the bottles are made from plastic that contains recycled plastics. They don’t use plastic packaging on slippers, our laundry bags are made of plants and ecofriendly and biodegradable, our shoTheyr caps are 100% recyclable, no plastic packaging, made of straw corn. Our guest laundry sheets made of paper and the size was reduced from A4 into A5. Water bottles in bedrooms made of 88% renewable materials - paper based bottle and plant based cap
The complimentary water supplied in the bedrooms is packaged in cartons made from 88% renewable materials. The soaps and shampoos in the bathrooms are stored in refillable plastic containers that are fixed to the wall.

General Manager Imelda Lineen said there is still plenty to be done but this certificate provides a huge morale boast in showing the whole team that the steps they are undertaking are not going unnoticed. This is just the start of the hotel’s and our journey,” she said.
