One of the most influential and celebrated traditional Irish bands of modern times, Lúnasa, will perform at Monroe’s Live on Sunday, September 29, staring at 8pm.
These legends of Irish music will showcase their decades of experience that have earned them a global following from Glastonbury to Carnegie Hall.
The band has recently recorded ten new tracks live at the Taku Taku club in Kyoto, Japan.
Standing at the forefront of contemporary Irish music, Lúnasa has redefined the boundaries of traditional Irish sound. The band’s blend of fiddle, pipes, flute, bass, accordion, and guitar, coupled with a passion for reinterpreting traditional music, results in a rich, dynamic sound.
Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh, the band was formed in 1997 by members of some of the most renowned Irish groups of the previous decade.
The current line-up features Trevor Hutchinson, famed bassist from The Waterboys; Cillian Vallely, a piper known for his work with Riverdance and collaborations with Bruce Springsteen; Kevin Crawford, one of Ireland's most respected flute players and a member of Moving Cloud; Seán Smyth, an award-winning fiddler who has performed with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; Colin Farrell, a multiple award-winning fiddler who has toured with Project West; and Ed Boyd, a guitarist who has made a name for himself in Britain’s folk scene with bands such as Flook, Kate Rusby, and Cara Dillon.
With over 250,000 records sold and more than 2,000 shows performed across 36 countries, this is a rare opportunity to experience Lúnasa on home soil at the award-winning Monroe’s Live venue.
Fiddler Seán Smyth, a well-known figure in Galway’s traditional music scene, shares a special connection with the city, describing it as "always a welcoming place for Lúnasa".
Described by critics as ‘Celtic royalty’, and ‘the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet’ Lúnasa will take the stage at Monroe’s Live next month.
