Renault continues to Captur the attention

The facelifted Renault Captur is now available in Ireland, and it is one of just a number of new models from the brand that have either arrived, or are on the way here shortly. With over 14,000 Renault Captur models sold in Ireland since it was launched a decade ago, the new iteration of this urban SUV remains a safe bet.

So what's new with the Captur? To start, it's been given a new front end, new lights, a more contemporary rear end, and a two-tone bodywork with 14 possible configurations. The Nouvel’R one-piece logo has been built into the multi-faceted grille, while Renault has added a higher, more horizontal bonnet.

For purposes of engine cooling, the front end features a horizontal air intake above the aerodynamic splitter, with another in the bumper. Two air inlets positioned on either side of the front end, next to the daytime running lights, are said to contribute to aerodynamics and the cooling of the front brakes.

The new front lights feature full LED technology as standard on all levels of trim. In the same way as on the new Clio, the LED daytime running lights take on a vertical half-diamond shape. The rear light housing is now transparent, revealing the inside of the lamps.

I tested the newly introduced 'Esprit Alpine E-Tech Hybrid 145' model, which is powered by 1.6-litre petrol-electric system with a six-speed automated gearbox, a 36kW electric motor and a 18kW high-voltage starter generator, plus a 1.2kWh battery pack. This top spec – which is probably the one you want – starts from €38,590.

There is also the option of a TCe 90 petrol powertrain (from €29,120 ), which comprises a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged unit equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Moving on inside, and Renault has replaced leather with grained cover material as the brand aims to completely phase out animal-derived materials by 2025. In the Esprit Alpine trim, you get things such as the French tricolour of the front seats, heated leather steering wheel with red white and blue stitching, along with a frameless electrochrome rear-view mirror. Max boot capacity is 616-litres.

The Esprit Alpine Captur has gained a new 10.4-inch vertical centre touchscreen which has an OpenR Link multimedia system with Google built-in, and includes Android Automotive 12. Google services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play apps can also all be accessed at the touch of a finger. There are a few physical climate control shortcuts just below the centre screen.

The updated Captur is roomy and well laid out, while handling, ride and tech are much-improved. Renault also quotes a fuel return of 4.6l/100km and a CO2 g/km rating of 107, leaving the Captur as a viable option in its class.
