Offering the perfect cuddly cure for a ‘ruff’ day, Atlantic Technological University will host its inaugural ‘ATU Canines on Campus’, a dog walking fundraising event across three of its campuses (Galway city, Sligo, Donegal - Letterkenny ) on Monday, August 26.

The walk, which coincides with National Dog Day, will raise much needed funds for four animal rescues in the west and northwest of Ireland; MADRA (Galway ), Galway SPCA, Leitrim Animal Welfare and Animals in Need Donegal. It will be the first initiative of its kind in Ireland.

With rescues across Ireland facing increasing demand for their services, ATU staff and students have launched the pilot project with the intent to raise awareness and funds for the issue.

Dawn Divilly, director of operations for local charity, MADRA Dog Rescue, has described the event as a ‘wonderful initiative’ which highlights the bond between humans and dogs.

“We are delighted to be chosen as one of ATU’s charities for their Canines on Campus event. This wonderful initiative highlights the incredible bond between humans and animals.

“Rescues like us are under constant pressure to help the thousands of unwanted dogs in Ireland and we can only do this with the support of our communities. We look forward to collaborating with ATU to create a memorable and impactful event for the community.”

Members of the public who are interested in donating, or taking part in ATU Canines on Campus at any of the three participating campuses can register online at atu.ie/caninesoncampus Registration is mandatory for the dog walk.
