Minister for Disability and Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East, Anne Rabbitte, has received confirmation from the Minister for Education that three schools in Galway have been sanctioned for building works.

High Cross College, Tuam, Caltra National School, and Kiltormer National School have all been approved for works to advance on upgrading their school buildings. It brings to five the number of schools in county Galway approved for works over the past 14 days, following approvals for both Mercy College in Woodford and the Presentation College in Headford this month.

High Cross College has received initial project approval for six class Special Education Needs Base, including the possible Refurbishment & Demolition of Existing Buildings, the construction of a New Build Extension or the construction of a New Build, and all associated site works.

Caltra NS has received the go ahead to tender for an extension to include a mainstream class and a special education teaching room for one to one teaching or group work. Kiltormer NS is also going to tender to reconfigure an Special Education room to create an additional mainstream classroom.

“It has been an amazing couple of weeks for schools in county Galway with five schools having been sanctioned for building works by the Department of Education in the last fourteen days. I appreciate that my colleague Minister for Education Norma Foley has been so open to engagement in hearing my arguments for why this investment is so greatly needed,” Minister Rabbitte said.

“For Caltra National School and Kiltormer National School, they will now be able to go to tender to commence their building works, while High Cross College in Tuam has received their initial project approval, meaning they can now plan for the works they need to pursue. These are very much welcome developments and will do wonder for the schools and their communities.

“As I’ve said before, investment in education is crucial and that applies to the children themselves, but also the school buildings they use. Likewise, this will be a huge boost for the principals and staff, and I say well done to them all for the work put in to date to get these projects advanced.

“The Government has been committed to an ambitious Capital programme that delivers new and modernised facilities in school communities. We’re absolutely supportive of continuing this very ambitious and important programme of delivery. I look forward to ongoing engagement with Minister Foley to ensure delivery for these schools, and others around Galway who I know are also hoping to secure approval to upgrade their schools,” concluded Minister Rabbitte.
