A young, first-time publican from Galway has decided to nail his colours to the mast, and drape maroon and white across his new venture on Dublin city’s busy ‘Camden Street Mile’ of bars and restaurants ahead of the All-Ireland football final this Sunday.
Alan Glynn (35 ), originally from Williamstown, Co Galway, recently took possession of Against The Grain on Wexford Street in Dublin, opposite the famous Whelan’s Live music venue. The pub was previously run by Galway Bay Brewery which went into voluntary liquidation last month.
“I have a new name for the place in the pipeline, but for now - and for this weekend coming - we’re simply calling the place ‘Gaillimh Abú’,” says Glynn, who learned his trade under John Mannion of The Front Door and The Dáil Bar in Galway city centre.
Glynn, whose father Richard ran Glynn’s Corner House in Williamstown, and uncle John managed the Clayton Hotel in Galway city, said he’s hoping to strike a deal with the Galway Hooker Brewery this weekend to “look after” customers wearing Galway colours.
The former Williamstown and Bhearna football player says he has a “strong feeling” the Tribesmen will bring Sam home this Sunday. Gaillimh abú indeed!
