Gaeil na Gaillimhe, Galway city's Irish language speaking GAA team, welcomed the Pittsburgh Celtics to South Park (aka "The Swamp" ) on Tuesday, July 15.
The touring side are from Pennsylvania, and have predominantly deep Irish American and Galway roots, along with some Italian and Dutch links. They were officially welcomed by Deputy Mayor Cllr. Níall Mc Nelis on the evening.
Gaeil na Gaillimhe welcomes everyone interested in improving their fitness via GAA - and knowledge of An Ghaeilge from those new to the language, from those with fluency. The club was founded in 2016 by Stiofán Seoige, enjoying continual growth, now fielding a women's and a men's team with a playing population of over 70 in total.
The visiting Pittsburgh Celtics were the winners on the night. This was the ideal challenge for Gaeil na Gaillimhe's men's team. They will now play their championship semi-final on Friday 19 against Baile Chlár na Gaillimhe.
Over 100 Americans from Pittsburgh Celtics are on their tour of our island. A former Pittsburgh Celtics player and now Gaeil na Gaillimhe player, Céiteach Mac Stiofán ensured that the touring party sampled Ireland's finest city.
"It was my pleasure to welcome the Pittsburgh team and we really enjoyed the match. It was a great chance for both groups (that are ) so passionate about Irish culture on both sides of the Atlantic to meet up". Cathaoirleach Ghaeil na Gaillimhe, Stiofán Seoighe.
