The Galmont Hotel & Spa has taken its most impressive stride in sustainability yet by being awarded the prestigious Green Tourism Gold Award which recognises the business’s strong focus on reducing its environmental impact.

Marking only its second year in the Green Tourism awards certification programme, remarkable efforts from The Galmont’s sustainably-minded team have seen the hotel move from the bronze level to gold within the space of just 12 months and is the first establishment within the nationwide MHL Hotel Collection to do so.

Eco updates that have so far been made to the city centre hotel, contributing to the reduction of its carbon footprint, include: the installation of EV charging stations in the on-site car park (with more to be added this year ); and an impressive waste diversion rate of 85% from landfill since new separation methods were introduced alongside refillable in-room toiletries and a switch to bio-degradable takeaway cups and straws which can be composted while the lid can be recycled. Used kitchen oil is sent to a biodiesel plant for recycling and all packaging used to transport food produce is recycled by the hotel’s suppliers and reused.

General Manager Stefan Lundstrom said they are delighted to have received the gold certification which recognises their strong sustainability ethos at The Galmont.

“Over the past twelve months we have invested in our people by providing training to a newly formed Galmont Green Committee and providing the team on the ground the opportunity to review their own practices to be more environmentally aware.

“The hotel is continuously investing in sustainability practices which have so far included: upgrading our hotel boilers, LED lights now covering over 95% of the property, and bi-weekly energy usage meetings where actions are agreed and communicated to the team.

“We have reduced our gas usage per room sold by 19.6% and electricity by 16.2% from 2022. We also plan to reduce our total gas consumption by 20% and our electricity by 10% by the end of 2024. There’s still plenty to be done but this certification provides a huge morale boost in showing the whole team that the steps we’re taking aren’t going unnoticed. This is just the beginning,” he said. www.thegalmont.com
