Matera is another highlight, the third longest continuously inhabited human settlement in the world and named the European Capital of Culture for 2019. Its unique ‘sassi’ caves were carved over time into the limestone. The layers of houses are now protected on the UNESCO World Heritage list. A visit here is like being transported back to the ancient Holy Land and the area has been used for several religious films.
No visit to Puglia would be complete without including the beautiful city of Lecce, 2,000 years old and the home of Lecce stone, a special limestone used in many sculptures over the years. With much of its limestone used in the Baroque architecture the city has been nicknamed ‘the Florence of the South’ .
