Big screens for city organists

Galway Cathedral’s annual summer concert series begins next Thursday, July 4, and runs for the next six Thursdays, with concerts at 8pm.

Ray O’Donnell, cathedral organist and director of the concert series, says large screens will allow the audience to watch organists at work, conveying all the action from the gallery to the pews below.

“Our summer concerts offer a truly immersive experience," says O'Donnell, "Sound, stone and sunlit stained glass on summer evenings!"

Galway’s own Luminosa orchestra headlines this year’s series, joined by organist Peter Barley (St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick ) and guest musicians, conducted by the cathedral’s own O’Connell.

The concert features Josef Rheinberger’s wonderful organ concerto no.2 in G minor, as well as music by Handel and Hindemith.

Lucy Hayward O'Leary, Executive Director of Luminosa String Orchestra, says she is expecting a spectacular concert. "The cathedral was in many ways the birthplace of the Luminosa orchestra, and we are thrilled to be performing with guests alongside the magnificent organ. I can’t think of a more exciting combination and one that promises a real wow for audiences. If you can get to this concert, I would highly recommend it.”

Another highlight of this year’s series is organist Judit Máté and her husband Gyula Nagy, a baritone soloist, presenting music marking the centenary of Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford.
