Claregalway’s Georgina Martin has been selected to represent Ireland in the over-40s division at the FIMBA European Championships taking place in Pesaro, Italy, from June 21 to 30.

Georgina, who is married to Neil and mother to Noah and Lara, is a native of Glenamaddy, Co Galway. She teaches in Roscommon Community College and plays national league basketball with Claregalway Basketball Club.

"It’s a tremendous honour to represent my country and compete at such a high level with other teams from across Europe," she said. "We are drawn in Pool D where we will face strong competition from Austria and Germany, but we’ve been training hard and are well prepared for the challenges ahead."

Retail director at Specsavers Headford Road, Annette Flanagan, added: "We’re delighted to sponsor the Claregalway Senior Women’s team and in recognition of Georgina’s fantastic achievements, have made a financial contribution towards her costs as the trip is entirely self-funded by each player. My business partner at Specsavers Headford Road, Miriam Murphy, and myself both grew in Galway city, and we are always delighted to support our local community and recognise these milestone achievements."

The FIMBA European Championships is a highly anticipated event bringing together top veteran players from across the continent. The tournament boasts 66 women’s and 127 men’s teams from all over Europe competing in 16 age categories from over 35 years old to over 75.

At home, Claregalway Basketball Club senior ladies continue to impress, winning the Galway local league and cup. They also reached the National BIDL final for the second season in a row. Head coach Paul Flanagan was delighted to crown the season with Georgina’s selection to the Irish team. "We are very proud of everything Georgina contributes, both on and off the court," he said. "Her dedication, skill and competitiveness in the way she plays will no doubt benefit the Irish team in the competition. As a club, we are very grateful to Miriam, Annette and all the Specsavers Headford Road staff for their continued support to our club and indeed to the Galway Masters International Tournament."
