St. Joseph's Special School in Galway recently celebrated its 60th anniversary with a heart-warming event that brought together past and present students, staff, families, and neighbours. The festivities were made even more special, thanks to Tom Kenny’s wonderful overview of the school's history in the Galway Advertiser prior to the event. As guests arrived, they were greeted by two stilt walkers at the brightly decorated entrance and welcomed by staff, board of management members, and the school’s principal, Sarah McGinley.

In a beautifully decorated school hall, guests enjoyed storytelling sessions featuring past principals, Breda Dolan and Mary Cunningham, Julie Silke-Daly the CEO of Ability West, and the Minister for Special Education, Hildegarde Naughton TD. Minister Naughton spoke eloquently about the school and announced the opening of permanent posts for therapists in the NCSE for 2024. The audience was taken on an emotional journey with a photo story of each decade skilfully compiled by assistant principal Patrick Ruane. Wonderful memories from the beginning with principal Mrs Conneally moved attendees from laughter to tears.

The 60th Anniversary Committee had worked diligently for months to create an event that was both fun and awe-inspiring. Attendees paid homage to the founders and those who continue to uphold the school’s legacy as a centre for excellence in special education in Ireland. The day concluded with a delightful picnic, an enchanting bubble show, and the planting of a lovely, white cherry tree to commemorate the occasion.

St. Joseph's Special School extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making this day a great success for pupils and their families. It truly takes a village to create such a wonderful, memorable celebration.
