Sterility masters in Galway is European first

The Atlantic Technological University in Galway has launched a master’s degree in End-to-End Sterility Assurance, thought to be the first such course in Europe.

Designed in association with Irish Medtech Skillnet, the course centres on the types of testing necessary to ensure medical devices are free from harmful microorganisms after manufacture. Bacteria and other contaminations can be serious risks to patient safety.

Medtech companies perform sterility assurance testing to identify any potential contamination during the manufacturing process and confirm the effectiveness of their sterilisation methods. Routine sterility assurance testing is a regulatory requirement for medical device manufacturers in many countries, including across the EU and in the United States.

Irish Medtech Skillnet, one of 70 Skillnet Ireland Business Networks nationwide, has launched Europe’s first Master's in End-to-End Sterility Assurance with Atlantic Technological University (ATU ).

Dr Eugene McCarthy, Head of Department of Analytical, Biopharmaceutical and Medical Science at ATU, said the new course will provide regional and national skills needs.
