An Taoiseach Simon Harris has appointed Galway Senator Seán Kyne as the Seanad’s deputy leader and leader of the Fine Gael group.

Sen Kyne takes over the positions from Regina Doherty, who was elected to the European Parliament at the recent elections.

“I have worked closely alongside Seán for many years since we were both elected to the Dáil in 2011," Mr Harris said.

"Seán served alongside me at Cabinet both as Chief Whip and as a Minister of State. With his experience across the Oireachtas, he will make a fine leader in the Seanad, and we are very lucky to have a person of his calibre.

“I also want to thank MEP Regina Doherty for her work and commitment to the Seanad prior to her election to the European Parliament," the Taoiseach added.

Senator Seán Kyne said: “I am delighted and honoured to be asked to be Deputy Leader of the Seanad and Leader of the Fine Gael group in the Upper House by the Taoiseach Simon Harris. Having been elected in 2020, I’ve enjoyed working with a great team of colleagues who are very diligent and hard-working Senators.

“I look forward to continuing working with them in this new role. I want to thank Regina Doherty for her leadership over the last four years as Leader and Deputy Leader.”
