Cllr Helen Ogbu proudly attended her first official engagement as a newly elected representative for Galway City East on Saturday, June 15, at the BounceBack Enterprises open day celebrating Traveller Pride 2024 in Ballybrit.

The event was a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and creativity, showcasing the talents and traditions of the Traveller community.

The open day featured a variety of activities including live music, tin-smithing, traditional bread making, face painting, beady pocket making, traditional games, and a photo exhibition. Attendees were treated to delicious refreshments and had the opportunity to explore beautifully restored wagons.

One of the standout features of the event was the upcycling demonstrations, where old furniture was transformed into stunning pieces ready to adorn homes at a fraction of the cost of new furniture.

Councillor Ogbu expressed her admiration for the initiative, emphasizing the crucial role of BounceBack Enterprises in promoting sustainability and community empowerment.

"The upcycling of old furniture into beautiful, functional pieces is not only environmentally friendly but also supports local craftsmanship and innovation," said Councillor Ogbu. "This initiative is reclaiming spaces and establishing the Traveller community as the original recyclers."

Councillor Ogbu met with many friends and supporters who had rallied around her during the recent local elections. She highlighted the importance of supporting BounceBack Enterprises and other similar initiatives that contribute to the cultural and economic vibrancy of Galway city.

"I encourage all residents of Galway to visit the BounceBack Upcycling Centre for furniture and bedding," Councillor Ogbu continued. "Supporting local enterprises like BounceBack is vital for fostering community spirit and promoting sustainable living. Together, we can give this initiative the boost it deserves."

Councillor Ogbu believes that BounceBack Enterprises is a testament to the creativity and resilience of the Traveller community and that by supporting their work, we not only help preserve traditional crafts and skills but also promote a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
