Mayor of Galway Cllr. Eddie Hoare (FG ) has welcomed progress on a number of key roads and infrastructure projects across the City.
A number of junctions are due to be upgraded, safe crossings installed and footpaths constructed as part of the planned works.
Speaking on the projects Cllr. Hoare said that he has received confirmation from Galway City Council that three key locations in the Galway City are due to be enhanced in the coming months.
“Phase 1 of the Browne Roundabout upgrade works should be completed this year and will include two new crossings making it safer for all road users.
“The junction between Circular Road and Siobhan McKenna Road has been approved for upgrade by the National Transport Authority (NTA ) and funding allocated to make this junction safer.
“Finally, a commitment for a safe pedestrian crossing at the Dangan Sportsground has been received from Transport Infrastructure Ireland and designs are currently being prepared before the project goes to tender. All of these projects are most welcome and I am delighted to see them on track to be delivered in 2024,” he said.
He added that a report will soon issue to councillors on the Multi Modal Transport Corridor Review.
“This is a project I have consistently championed and will provide a report on the feasibility of footpaths for Circular Road, Ballagh Road, Letteragh Road, Rahoon Road and other locations where no footpaths are in place.
“This is a key piece of work and can transform our communities. For example, we need a bus service for Circular Road. The NTA have confirmed there is sufficient demand for a bus but the road is too narrow in parts for an intersecting high frequency service. On foot of this report issuing we should see the road widened, paths and lighting installed and then we can re-engage with the NTA on the provision of a bus service. This will also be the case for the other areas under review.
“I look forward to seeing these projects commenced and delivered in the coming 12-18 months. The plans are in place, the funding is there – we now need to deliver on these plans,” Mayor Hoare concluded.
