Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan Cheevers has said that the new council when elected must ringfence at least €1 million euro in its annual budget on a yearly basis towards footpath and roads maintenance in the city.
He added that this must be separate from other funding measures that also that needs to be applied for these projects.
“It has become apparent in the canvassing in this local election that there is a serious issue with the quality of footpaths and road surfaces in areas across the Eastside of city especially in the older estates in areas like Ballybane, Renmore, Mervue also Riverside estate and Headford Road.
“I believe the residents in these areas deserve better infrastructure. the conditions of some of footpaths especially are appalling in many areas where there is an elderly population who are seriously concerned about their health and safety, especially residents with mobility issues.
“This budgetary measure must be top of the list going into the next council and if elected I will put this as part of my priorities,” he said.
