While out canvassing the neighbourhoods on the Headford Road, it became evident to Labour candidate for Galway City East Helen Ogbu that that there is a significant need for facilities catering to children and teenagers of all ages.
Ogbu feels that these neighborhoods, which are home to many young families, are lacking in amenities and facilities for their children.
Ogbu said: “Currently, there is only one small playground located in the private estate of Caireal Mor, which serves over 500 young families. This limited facility is insufficient for the growing needs of the area. During my visit, a young child asked me if I was the person they could speak to about getting a new playground. This heartfelt question highlights the urgent need for action.”
Ogbu says that, in addition to the playground, there is a pressing need for an astro turf pitch for teenagers to engage in sports activities.
“The existing football pitch at Caireal Mor Estate has had its goal posts removed and has been left unused for almost two years due to poor grass conditions. Residents have been pleading for over a decade for an astro turf pitch and additional playgrounds but have yet to see any progress,” she said.
Ogbu revealed that a resident expressed their frustrations to her, stating that children in the neighbourhood grow up without having a place of their own to play, exercise, and socialise. The resident felt that providing the right amenities for young people would significantly reduce rates of anti-social behaviour and improve mental health outcomes.
Ogbu fully agrees with this resident’s perspective, reaffirming her main priorities which revolves around mental health and providing amenities, support, and collaboration for young people.
“I am committed to being a strong voice for the community. I understand the issues we face and will advocate tirelessly to ensure that the needs of young people, children, elderly and families in Galway City East are highlighted and addressed,” said Ogbu.
