Galway is well known as one of Ireland’s leading cultural centres but tomorrow from 6pm, it’s going to go all out to encourage everyone to sample the arts in the city with the Galway Culture Night.
Galway Culture Night aims to make the arts widely accessible to all audiences and to encourage more people to partake of the city’s cultural life. Admission to most events will be free and a complimentary Culture Night Bus is being organised to transport people to the various events.
Inspired by the success of the Dublin Culture Night, organisers have decided to extend the programme to Galway, Cork, Waterford, and Limerick. The events start at 6pm, although some will begin earlier in the day.
Artspace Studios will hold the exhibition In Situ in the Liosbán Industrial Estate, Tuam Road. The studios will be open until 11am. Compántas na Taibhdheairce will stage a selection of opera favourites in the Black Box at 8pm with a host of Galway singers performing selections from Carmen, Nabucco, Tosca, and Rigoletto. Admission is free tomorrow.
Blue Teapot Theatre Co will host an evening of music, literature and drama in Munster Avenue from 6pm to 7.30pm. The Bold Gallery, Merchant’s Road, will host the Madhatter’s Tea Party & Exhibition from 6pm to 11pm.
Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop will host an open mic for poets and authors to read their work from 6pm to 11pm. The Galway Arts Centre will host live music and exhibitions from 6pm until late. The Galway Atlantaquaria, Salthill, will give a live aquatic exhibition from 6pm to 9pm.
There will be a dance show in the Galway City Library from 6pm to 9pm; a music and poetry recital in the Galway City Museum from 6pm to 9pm; Moments, Colours & Effects, an exhibition from the English born, Connemara based, artist Rosemary Carr at The Kenny Gallery; and Lorg Printmakers will give lectures and demonstrations in screen printing at its premises on the Tuam Road from 6pm to 10pm.
A theatrical performance will be given in the Nuns Island Studio at 8pm while in St Nicholas Collegiate Church there will be music concerts from 6.15pm to 8.30pm. There will also be music in the St Patrick’s Bandroom from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, and the Galway University Hospital from 6pm to 7.30pm with Galway based Scandanavian folk band Café Minor.
The Town Hall Theatre will present Druid’s production of Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inismaan at 6pm and 8pm. Contact the Town Hall on 091 - 569777 for ticket details. The White Room Gallery on the Tuam Road, will host Stones, Uisce, and Sticks, an exhibition of new works by Anna St George.
On the streets of Galway, Littlejohn and Andrias de Staic will lead a host of performers in various antics, throughout the night.
