Joyce Mathias, the Green Party candidate for the Galway City East in the coming election, has expressed profound gratitude for her nomination for the Mayor’s Award and appreciates the initiative to award people for their contributions to community and humanity. Speaking further on the nomination, she said that she never knew she was being noticed.

“I was just doing what is expected of me, contributing in making our community a better place. I never knew I was being noticed” she said.

“The nomination is among the good things that have happened to me in Galway City, being recognised as someone who has contributed to the city and country that I’m living is something I can never take for granted,” she said. Ms Mathias added that the nomination is a vitality to her, and it will spur her to do more in terms of community engagement and activism.

She attributed her compassion for others environmental sensitivity and consciousness to her upbringing and the discipline that her parents instilled in her right from childhood.

“Growing up in Nigeria, my parents taught me the virtues of compassion, kindness, hard work, perseverance, and community service. So, when I came here, I knew from the offset that I would contribute positively to the development of my host community/country. I knew also that when I landed here, I would bring positive energy to those who cross my path” she said.

Ms Mathias urged both the citizens and migrants alike to grow increasingly sensitive to community needs and wants and contribute in diverse ways to advance the cause of development.
